Defeating Operator Complacency

Reminder:

The Dangers of Complacency

Complacency has a significant impact on our operational reputation - we often perform the same tasks day after day; at times even at the same hour of each day, and it is easy to fall into a rut in which we no longer think through the duties we’re performing. Sampling is a prime example: it almost becomes a motor reflex to pull samples and prepare them for shipment to the lab. The following are some helpful reminders:

  • Monitor process quality control practices daily as applicable such as:

    • Are disinfectant residuals or UV intensity adequate?

    • Are dissolved oxygen levels sufficient to obtain the desired removal?

    • Does the product being sampled look right; are there solids or foreign substances which would skew results?

    • Have you performed field testing?

  • Make sure sample collection protocols are followed:

    • Check the environment for contamination sources (dust, rain, etc.)

    • Wear the proper PPE such as masks and nitrile gloves.

  • Review results immediately:

    • Many elevated results can be averaged down with repeat samples.

    • It is impossible to operate a system efficiently if test results aren’t reviewed until the end of the month!

These simple practices will help us ensure that we’re protecting public health and the environment, as well as making sure that CWS is the preferred operations partner for our clients!
